All-Natural Guide to Eczema Skin Care by Pure Complexions

Using all-natural (chemical-free) personal care products will reduce exposure to possible irritants and most likely reduce the severity and frequency of eczema outbreaks.

Once you reduce irritant exposure, eczema treatment is usually targeted at the underlying symptoms like dryness, itching, local inflammation, and high risk of infection.

  I. Dryness and Itching: Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized is essential to controlling dryness and itching.

Daily Warm Bath: A once daily 5-10 min warm bath is recommended to keep your skin hydrated. Tepid water is best because hot water can cause thermal damage by breaking down skin's natural waxy protective barrier. This damage dries the skin out and intensifies itching. If more frequent bathing is preferred be sure to apply a heavy moisturizer immediately after to prevent evaporation related dryness. Avoid conventional chemically based soaps from the grocery store. They are harsh, tend to dry the skin out, and often contain irritating chemicals that aggravate eczema.

  • Bar Soap Unscented (Harry Bar) by Brigit True Organics (Top Seller) - a great all-natural and unscented moisturizing soap bar that works really well for eczema. If you are having a major flare-up, this soap is extremely benign and has such a low irritant potential that we recommend using this product first until your skin calms down.

  • Butter Bar Soap by Vermont Soap Unscented soap bar married with organic shea butter for a delightfully moisturizing cleanser.

  • Mailette Lavender Botanical Body Soap Bar By Badger The best of both worlds; organic Shea Butter AND organic Lavender for an amazingly relaxing and therapeutic soap bar.

  • Vital Image Face & Body Wash (Top Seller) - an excellent full body cleanser with a unique silky smooth texture that lifts impurities from your skin using living organic plant extracts that are suspended in a proprietary nutrient bath, called COPS. It leaves skin soft and supple without leaving a residue

  • Keys Island Rx Liquid Soap (Top Seller) a wonderful healing blend of exotic (solvent-free) orange and sage essential oils, with extra soothing aloe vera, moisturizing avocado oil, and our all-natural Islandceutical Micelle antioxidant.

Bath Salts and Soaks: Bath crystals and salts can be added to bath water to enhance healing, draw out impurities, and sooth/condition inflamed skin. Soaks are especially good for acute eczema that is weeping and crusty. Avoid pure sodium chloride bath salts (table salt), they lack the healing minerals that sea salt and mineral salts offer.

  • Dakota Free Fragrance Free Bath Crystals This healing blend contains magnesium salts and sea salts which can help heal eczema lesions. It also contains glycerin which is very moisturizing and soothing.

  • Vital Image Therapeutic Bath Salts - This relaxing mineral blend allows you to enjoy the healing properties of a natural hot spring right in your own bath tub. It also contains a blend of soothing oatmeal and warming ginger to enhance the effect.

Bath Oils: Add bath oils to your tub to help moisturize. Soak in tub 5 minutes, then add 1 tablespoon of oil to your bath. By soaking 1st, the water plumps your skin, adding the oil seals in absorbed moisture.

Natural Moisturizer: Apply a natural moisturizer immediately after bathing (and before the skin is completely dry to help trap and lock moisture into the skin). Thick creams and ointments are better than lotions for moisturizing eczema skin patches. Avoid petroleum based moisturizers - they don't allow your skin to breath, thus have no healing properties. By using naturally based vitamin and mineral enriched lotions, your skin will get the best chance to thrive.

  • Fragrance-Free Shea Butter Brulee by Devita (Top Seller) - an excellent choice. This brulee is thick and rich, making it a perfect eczema cream.

  • Dakota Free Fragrance-Free Moisturizer (Top Seller) - thicker than traditional lotions, this all-purpose lotion is economically priced and great for eczema.

  • Organic Raw Shea Butter - Tin by Vermont Soap (Top Seller) - Unscented - You cant beat the purity or simplicity of pure organic shea butter. Scoop a little out of the tin and let it melt into your skin after a warm bath. Your skin will thrive!

  • Tortuga Therapeutic Face & Body Lotion by Keys - a restoring, moisturizing, healing lotion that combines the therapeutic oils of avocado, black cumin and carrot seed. It provides relief from itching, redness, and many common skin problems (e.g. eczema).

  • MetaCare by Keys - Keys newest healing moisturizing formula that uses neem and karanja oil. An excellent first-aid lotion that deeply moisturizes and effectively prevents infection.

Natural Anti-Itch Formulas: During the day or in between bathes, mild or healing eczema patches may be treated with anti-itch lotions.

II. Local and Systemic Inflammation: Intense itching & subsequent scratching is the predominant factor contributing to the red inflamed skin associated with eczema. Getting control of the itching is the best place to start (see above for techniques to control itching).

OTC / Prescription Eczema Preparations: Medical doctors usually prescribe steroidal creams or immune depressing ointments for severe eczema cases, however, these treatments may come with potential side effects. Animal studies have linked skin cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to topical use of Elidel and Protopic. Investigations are underway to examine these links in humans, but many prescription eczema creams are now required to display black box warning labels on their packaging.

Natural Topical Anti-Inflammatory Creams: Natural anti-inflammatories like those contained in shark and emu oil can improve eczema inflammation without harmful side effects.

Natural Systemic Anti-Inflammatories: Although eczema is thought of as a skin condition, it is best to think of it as a systemic inflammatory condition that presents itself on your skin.  If you treat the underlying systemic inflammation, then the skin issues also improve. Western medicine agrees. Systemic anti-inflammatory drugs like prednisone are often prescribed by medical doctors for severe eczema. Although they temporarily produce positive results, they often create a host of unpleasant side effects (e.g., increased hunger, weight gain, depression, reduced immune system, acne, insomnia, upset stomach, fatigue, increased blood sugar, etc).  For many, they begrudgingly suffer through steroid treatments in order to get relief. Others, like myself, feel these side effects are too risky and prefer to seek out healthier avenues.

It has taken us many years of trial and error to find a naturally based, safe and effective alternative to oral steroids, but our search delightfully ended in 2005.

Vitalzym by World Nutrition is an outstanding product. It is a systemic enzyme supplement that offers powerful anti-inflammatory relief. There are 2 versions of Vitalzym; Original Vitalzym and VitalzymXe. VitalzymXe is a more potent version and based on my clinical experience has anti-inflammatory effects similar to prescription prednisone but without the side effects or health risks. We carry VitalzymXe, but it is only available from a qualified healthcare practitioners, so it is reserved for our Holistic Healing Consultation Clients. If you are interested in VitalzymXe and/or would like more information on how to become a Pure Complexions Client, please see our Holistic Healing Consulting Services or e-mail us directly:

III. Prevent Infection: Inflamed, cracked, and weeping skin is considerably more vulnerable to infection than normal skin. Broken skin should always be monitored for the signs and symptoms of infection; To prevent complications, always consult your physician if you have any the following signs and symptoms.

  • Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the affected area.

  • Red streaks extending from the affected area.

  • Drainage of pus from the area.

    • Yellowish to light brown crust or pus-filled blisters over existing patches of eczema may indicate a bacterial infection that should be treated with an antibiotic.

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin.

  • Fever of 100 F(37.8 C) or higher.

Natural Antiseptics: Tea Tree Oil has powerful antiseptic, antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It also has anti-itch qualities and acts as a mild pain reliever when applied to fresh wounds or burns. Tea Tree Oil has been clinically proven to reduce scar formation. Studies have shown that in addition to killing germs and dissolving pus, tea tree oil is also non-irritating, so it leaves wounds clean without causing tissue damage (compare this to the use of hydrogen peroxide in wounds - peroxide dissolves pus and kills germs, but also irritates and damages skin which may increase scar formation).

  • To help fight infection, we also carry Super Tea Tree Gel by Dakota Free which is 5 times stronger than their Original Tea Tree Gel.

  • To help fight infection and stimulate healing, you've got to try our New multi-purpose ozone gel, called Ozene by PRL.

  • Add 2-3 drops of essential oils to your bath to utilize their anti-septic and aromatherapy properties. Be sure to use essential oils that were naturally isolated without the use of chemical solvents. Because they are significantly less expensive, most mainstream and even "natural" health food store variety essential oil products utilize some type of petrochemical during the extraction process. Even the slightest chemical residue can irritate the tender balance of eczema prone skin. We make it easy, our essential oils are naturally isolated & chemical free.

    • Lavender Spray Premier by PRL - (the purist solvent-free extraction) Lavender has natural antibiotic, anti-septic, detoxifying and calming aromatherapy properties. It promotes healing and prevents scarring by stimulating wound cells to regenerate more quickly.

    • Organic Tea Tree Essential Oil by Tiferet - (solvent-free extraction) Tea tree has anti-viral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties and can be used to treat a wide range of conditions. Its' anti-pyretic (anti-itch) properties make it a valuable tool for the treatment of eczema.
